"The curlew wasn't really part of my life before I moved to Ireland. What's more, I found it a funny looking bird when I first saw it... but since then, since I'm living near the sea, and after getting through several lockdowns when my only escape was to go for a walk on the shores, the curlew became part of the place I call home now. When I hear their call it's like seeing a friend.
Dollymount is the name of the beach at Bull Island where I go if I miss this sound, making it a fitting title for this curlew flying over the marram grass. A sight I'd like to see in the future!"

Curlews are not so rare in my area, but I only see them solitary, and I've spotted a pair only once. The problem, as I've learnt, is the decline of breeding pairs as they can't successfully breed here. This artwork was created for Curlew Action's art competition. The theme: What does the Curlew mean to you? My answer in short is that I cannot imagine a seashore without them, they are part of the picture I have in mind when I think of these shores. The image I painted here is an illustration of this picture, a lonely curlew foraging in a winter day.

Curlews in the Estuary - but for how long? (inscribed) No 2 - by Hilary Kington

Before the ink dried I scribed the curlew's plight into the curves of the mud and onto the curlew's back. Curlews have a hauntingly melancholic call but it is a joy to see and hear them in the estuary. This is something that future generations deserve to experience too, so it is up to us to make sure they can.

'Precious' by Joanna Martin
This is a four colour reduction linocut print on 220g Fabriano paper and is a limited edition of 17.
Size: printed area 200 x 200mm, sheet size 350 x 330mm
I am a designer/printmaker based near Strangford Lough in County Down and I am passionate about wading birds, particularly the curlew. I was inspired to create this print specifically for World Curlew Day to illustrate the vulnerability of the Curlew's nest or 'Scrape' positioned as it is on the ground.
'Precious' is my interpretation of a clutch of speckled pale olive-green curlew eggs, sitting so precariously on the ground, hidden in the grass. I have added some lettering referring to the cry of the curlew, an evocative sound which can vary from "curlee, curlee" to a bubbling trill floating above the landscape as they fly away.

I am a designer/printmaker based near Strangford Lough in County Down and I am passionate about wading birds, particularly the curlew. Here the female is on guard as her mate flies overhead. It is meant to represent one of the few remaining boggy, wetland areas in Northern Ireland where curlews still return to breed.

'Hope of a Brighter Future' by Owen Williams

I have been a professional wildlife artist for 36 years and the call of curlew in the spring near my home in West Wales was the soundtrack of my youth. It is deeply saddening that I no longer hear this beautiful sound today - that is why I am happy to donate art to help raise funds for this initiative that brings hope for the reversal of the recent decline in breeding curlew in the UK.

This Curlew is my little tribute to a local hero, Eric Morecambe, one half of the comedic duo Morecambe and Wise!
He has been constructed from iron wire (some of which is recycled) and sits atop a piece of driftwood, gathered from the shore outside.

"Sketches for Mural" by ATM
Original sketches for the mural in Tower Hamlets in London, featured on our 'Podcasts' page.
These original sketches will be offered alongside prints of the completed street mural, framed together as a collage, telling the story of this important work of urban art.
Ultimately we can, and must, welcome birds and ecological abundance back to our country.
Birds are often the most noticeable creatures to disappear, their loss the warning sign that something is fundamentally wrong in the way we treat our environment. They are the canary in the mine.

This is a winter view of "my" salt marsh and one that is played out around our coastline. The words scribed into the landscape are of concerns for the future of these birds and their wild places. In centuries to come the moon will still rise and pull the tides in and out but will the curlews still be here? It would be a sad and empty landscape without them.

"Orkney Whaup" - by Jenny McLaren
"Whaup" is the word for Curlew in the local dialect.
15x15cm wood panel, section of out of copyright OS map scanned and printed with archival inks.
2cm deep edge, painted white, acrylic ink, watercolour, graphite pencil, matt acrylic spray varnish, ready to hang and also sits nicely on a shelf
The birds I paint are embedded in the places they inhabit. I paint on out of copyright OS maps that I scan and print using archival inks. The translucent nature of acrylic inks and watercolour allows the map to remain visible. I add random marks, lines and flecks of paint to trace the movement of wind and birds over the landscape. It will be a such loss if we do nothing to stop the decline of these beautiful birds and their habitat.

'Spending time in the landscape and amongst wildlife is a basic need for me and strongly feeds into my artistic practice. There are absences in the places I walk, observe and draw. Fields, woodland and rivers that were once filled with bird song, paws scampering, the glimmer of an insect wing. I seek out the places where precious life hangs on and then create my own image of it. A statement of hope for life, not extinction'.
